How to Read Your Medichecks Results: What "Normal" Isn't Telling You
You paid for a private panel, the PDF landed in your inbox, and most of it is green. Reassuring — until you notice how little the report actually says. A reference range, a flag, a tick. It tells you that you're not ill today. It doesn't tell you where you're heading.
That gap is the whole reason this article exists. Your Medichecks results contain far more signal than the green/amber/red flags suggest — but only if you read them against the right yardstick.
What the reference range actually means
Every number on your report is judged against a reference range — the band that roughly 95% of a "normal" population falls into. It's built to answer one clinical question: is this person sick right now? Outside the range, you get flagged. Inside it, you get a tick.
The problem is that "not currently ill" and "optimal for the long term" are two different standards, and the reference range only measures the first. You can sit comfortably inside the green band for years while a marker drifts steadily in the wrong direction. Nothing flags, because nothing has crossed the line yet. By the time it does, the trend has often been running a long time.
Reading your results well means shifting the question from am I in range? to where in the range am I, and which way am I moving?
The markers worth a second look
A few markers on a standard Medichecks panel reward closer attention than a simple flag gives them. None of the below is a diagnosis — it's context for a better conversation with your GP.
ApoB. This counts the number of particles in your blood capable of lodging in an artery wall — arguably a cleaner signal than standard cholesterol figures alone. Many panels won't flag ApoB until it's high, yet the level associated with lowest long-term risk sits well below that upper limit. If it's on your panel, its position within the range is more informative than the flag.
Lp(a). Largely set by your genes, measured once, and relevant for life. It isn't on every panel — but if yours includes it, it's a number worth knowing and raising with your GP, because it quietly shapes your baseline regardless of lifestyle.
Fasting insulin and HbA1c. Standard panels lean on glucose, but insulin often rises years before glucose moves. HbA1c shows your average over recent months. Watching these together tells you more about the direction of travel than a single fasting glucose reading.
hs-CRP. A marker of low-grade inflammation. A mildly raised single reading is easy to wave off as noise — but tracked over several panels, the trend is the interesting part, not any one value.
Ferritin. Sits at the crossroads of iron stores and inflammation, which is exactly why a lone reading can mislead. Context and repeat measurement matter more here than a one-off flag.
Optimal versus normal: the core idea
Put plainly: normal ranges are built around illness thresholds; optimal ranges are built around long-term outcomes. The first keeps you out of the clinic. The second is what people focused on healthspan actually track.
This is why two people can both be "in range" and be in very different positions — one comfortably central and stable, the other near the edge and drifting. The flag treats them identically. An optimal-range lens does not.
None of this is about self-diagnosing or overriding your clinician. It's about seeing the full picture in your own results, so that when something sits outside an optimal band you know it's worth a conversation rather than a shrug.
What to actually do with your results
- Look at position, not just the flag. Where a marker sits inside its range, and which direction it's moving across panels, carries more information than a pass/fail.
- Keep your panels. A single snapshot is weak; two or three over time reveal trends. Track the numbers that matter to you.
- Take the outliers to your GP. Any marker sitting outside its optimal range is a reasonable thing to raise. Bring the numbers; let a clinician interpret them in the context of the rest of your health.
- Don't act on a single reading. Labs vary, days vary, and one value is rarely the full story. Retest before drawing conclusions.
